How Do We Treat Cavities?
We treat cavities based on their size, location, and risk of progression, always prioritizing conservation of natural tooth structure.
1. Remineralization
-
Early lesions (white spots) may be reversed without a filling.
-
We may use silver diamine fluoride, fluoride varnishes, or products like Xarosen to stop or slow decay.
2. Fillings
-
For small to moderate decay, we gently remove the damaged portion and restore it with a filling.
-
We offer gold fillings, known for their exceptional fit, longevity, and ability to protect adjacent teeth. Gold is especially valuable in areas of high function.
3. Crowns or Onlays
-
If too much of the tooth is compromised, a crown may be needed for protection and strength.
We never recommend treatment that isn't necessary. If we feel a tooth can be safely monitored, we'll take that route.
How Do I Prevent Cavities?
Prevention is a daily practice and starts with understanding your personal risk factors:
-
Brush and floss daily (technique matters—we’ll show you how!)
-
Avoid frequent snacking or sipping on acidic drinks
-
Use fluoride or hydroxyapatite products to strengthen enamel
-
Address mouth breathing and dry mouth with nasal sprays or mouth taping at night
-
Use night guards if you clench or grind (bruxism can damage enamel)

What is a Cavity?
A cavity, or dental caries, is a spot of tooth decay that has permanently damaged the hard surface of your tooth. It's caused by bacteria in your mouth that feed on sugars and starches, creating acids that wear down enamel over time.
Cavities can start small and often don’t cause pain right away. Many people are surprised when we tell them they have one because they feel no discomfort. But tooth decay can be quietly progressing beneath the surface. That’s why early detection and regular checkups are so important.
Symptoms of cavities can include:
-
Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods
-
Visible pits or discoloration
-
Pain when biting or chewing
-
No symptoms at all—many are found during routine exams!
How do Cavities Form?
Cavities form when there is a disruption in the balance between demineralization (acid attacks) and remineralization (repair) in your mouth.
Each time you eat or drink something sugary or acidic, your mouth’s pH drops below 5.5. This is where the Stephan Curve comes in: it shows how frequently exposing your teeth to these acidic environments weakens enamel. It's not just how much sugar you eat, but how often.
For example, sipping on soda throughout the day is far more damaging than drinking it all at once with a meal. Add in dry mouth, mouth breathing, or acid reflux, and the risk increases.
