Dental Cleaning

A Partnership for Wellness

At Haven Dental, we consider ourselves stewards of your oral health. That means we’re here not just to address problems, but to help you avoid them altogether. Our mission is to keep you off the dental "rat wheel"—endless treatment cycles—and instead focus on sustainable, long-lasting care.

What Your First Visit Includes

You’ll receive a comprehensive evaluation with one of our experienced doctors, including:

  • A full examination of your teeth

  • Assessment of gum and periodontal health

  • Evaluation of your jaw joint (TMJ) and bite (occlusion)

  • Head and neck cancer screening

  • Visual tour of your mouth and any problem areas

  • Review of treatment recommendations and long-term prevention strategies

Every mouth is different. That’s why your care will be tailored to your specific needs—not a preset plan based on insurance codes.

Types of Dental Cleanings

Prophylactic Cleaning

Recommended for patients with healthy gums and no history of periodontal disease. This cleaning removes plaque, tartar, and stains to help maintain oral health.

Scaling in the Presence of Gingival Inflammation

If your gums are irritated or inflamed but there is no bone loss yet, we may recommend this cleaning. It addresses buildup that’s contributing to inflammation and gives your gums a chance to heal.

Scaling and Root Planing (SRP)

When inflammation extends deeper, affecting the bone that supports your teeth, it results in periodontal disease—a chronic, irreversible condition that requires specialized care.

When inflammation extends deeper, affecting the bone that supports your teeth, it results in periodontal disease—a chronic, irreversible condition that requires specialized care.

SRP is not just a “deep cleaning”—it’s a therapeutic procedure designed to:

  • Remove bacteria, plaque, and calculus from below the gumline

  • Smooth root surfaces to help gum tissue reattach

  • Halt progression of bone and attachment loss

SRP may require local anesthetic, multiple visits, and longer appointments. It’s a critical step in restoring stability and protecting your natural teeth for the long haul.

Comfort Matters to Us

We want every visit to feel safe, calm, and supportive. We offer a range of options to keep you comfortable:

  • Local or topical anesthetic for cleanings

  • Anti-sensitivity agents, such as Xarosen, fluoride, or silver diamine fluoride (SDF) to strengthen enamel, ease sensitivity, and slow decay

  • Oral anxiolytics (by prescription, if needed)

  • Sensory-friendly accommodations for neurodivergent patients

  • Cozy additions like neck pillows, blankets, and gentle music

Your comfort and peace of mind are always part of our treatment plan.

What Happens Next

After your exam and cleaning (or periodontal treatment plan), we will:

  • Create a personalized treatment plan based on your specific needs

  • Schedule your next visit(s)

  • Refer you to our trusted network of Portland specialists when necessary—because we believe in doing a few things exceptionally well, and collaborating when it benefits you

We don’t believe in being “jack of all trades” dentists. Instead, we focus on craftsmanship and precision, and we work with colleagues who share our commitment to excellence.

If your treatment plan isn’t reviewed in person during your first visit, don’t worry—it simply means our doctors are taking extra time to carefully evaluate your case. Once complete, you’ll receive a clear overview of your recommended treatments, timeline, and out-of-pocket investment.

What We Won't Do

  • Upsell or pressure you into treatment

  • Over-diagnose or recommend what we wouldn’t do for ourselves

  • Perform procedures that don’t align with our values or philosophy

  • Let insurance companies dictate your care

We believe that investing in your oral health is one of the most powerful ways to protect your overall well-being. We’re here to help you make that investment with confidence and clarity.
