I have dental anxiety...

dentist anxiety care portland

If going to the dentist makes you feel anxious, nervous, or even panicked—you’re not alone. At Haven Dental PDX, we understand that dental anxiety is very real, and we take it seriously. Whether your fears stem from a past experience, sensory sensitivities, or general apprehension, our goal is to make you feel safe, heard, and supported every step of the way.

Our Compassionate Approach to Anxiety

We begin with a collaborative care plan tailored to your individual needs. Before any treatment begins, we sit down with you to discuss your concerns, triggers, and what we can do to help you feel more comfortable. Some patients appreciate having more information, others prefer less—we listen first so we can respond in the way that best supports you.

We never rush care, and you’ll never be pressured into treatment before you're ready. Our appointment lengths are based on quality time, not production quotas.

Tools and Techniques We Use to Support You

  • Oral Anxiolytics: For patients with moderate anxiety, we offer medications such as benzodiazepines to help you relax prior to your appointment. These medications are prescribed ahead of time and taken under careful instruction.

  • Sensory-Friendly Options: We provide neck pillows, blankets, and sunglasses to reduce sensory overload.

  • Predictable Communication: You’ll always know what’s coming next. We can use hand signals, pause plans, and clear step-by-step explanations to help keep you grounded and informed.

  • Neurodivergent-Aware Care: We understand that some patients may need a different kind of support, whether it's desensitization visits, modified scheduling, or additional calming strategies.

When In-Office Support Isn't Enough

If your anxiety is severe and we find that your needs go beyond what we can provide comfortably in our office, we will refer you to a trusted partner for IV sedation or general anesthesia. Our goal is to make sure you receive the care you need in the safest, most respectful way possible.

You Are In Control

At Haven Dental PDX, we don’t just care for teeth—we care for people. If you’ve been putting off dental care because of fear, please know you’re not alone and that it’s never too late. You deserve dentistry that meets you where you are, without shame, pressure, or judgment.
