I am in pain or have a chipped or broken tooth...

Smiling in Sweater

Dental emergencies can be stressful and scary—but you don’t have to go through them alone. At Haven Dental PDX, we’re here to help with compassion, precision, and the resources to get you out of pain and on the path to healing.

Whether you're dealing with a toothache, a cracked or broken tooth, swelling, or you've had a dental injury or accident, our team will guide you through the next steps.

Root Canals: We Refer to Trusted Specialists

When the nerve of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or a crack, a root canal may be necessary to save it. At Haven Dental PDX, we believe that specialized care leads to the best outcomes.

We refer all root canal procedures to carefully selected endodontic specialists in Portland who are experts in saving teeth with precision and comfort. We work closely with them to ensure a seamless experience and high standard of care.

Tooth Extractions: When a Tooth Can’t Be Saved

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, a tooth is too damaged to be restored. When this is the case, a tooth extraction may be the healthiest option to prevent infection and protect surrounding teeth and bone.

At Haven Dental PDX:

  • We perform simple extractions when necessary, using a gentle and caring approach.

  • If your extraction is more complex (such as impacted wisdom teeth), we’ll refer you to a trusted oral surgeon.

  • We’ll also guide you through healing and replacement options, such as bridges or implants.

Limited Exams & Same-Day Treatment

If you’re in pain or have a pressing concern, we offer limited exams designed to target and treat the immediate issue. These focused visits are ideal for:

  • Toothaches

  • Chipped or broken teeth

  • Swelling or infections

  • Lost fillings or crowns

  • Bite discomfort

Whenever possible, we’ll offer same-day treatment or temporary solutions to stabilize the area and relieve your pain.

Broken Tooth? Here’s How We Can Help

Depending on the extent of the damage, we may recommend:

  • Smooth and polish minor chips

  • Tooth-colored fillings to rebuild structure

  • Bonding or veneers for aesthetic repairs

  • Crowns for large fractures that impact function

  • Onlays or inlays for precise, long-lasting restorations

We always aim to preserve what’s healthy, and recommend the most conservative option appropriate for your situation. Gold restorations may be discussed if long-term durability and protection are a priority.

What to Do if a Tooth Is Knocked Out or Broken

Accidents happen fast—so does the clock when it comes to saving a tooth. Here’s what you can do:

If a tooth is knocked out (avulsed):

  • Act quickly. Ideally, a knocked-out tooth can be re-implanted within 30–60 minutes.

  • Handle the tooth carefully. Hold it by the crown (top), not the root.

  • Do not scrub or remove attached tissue.

  • Rinse gently if dirty.

  • Try to reinsert it into the socket if possible. Otherwise, place it in a cup of milk or saline.

  • Call us immediately. We’ll prioritize getting you in.

If a tooth is broken:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.

  • If there's pain or bleeding, call us right away.

  • Save any broken pieces and bring them with you to your appointment.

You Deserve Relief and Respect

Dental pain and trauma aren’t just physical—they’re emotional, too. Whether you’re an established patient or brand new, we’re here to provide care that’s:

  • Judgement-free

  • Honest and informative

  • Focused on your comfort and long-term health

We don’t upsell, over-diagnose, or rush you through the process. At Haven Dental PDX, we take time to truly understand the issue and partner with you in finding the best solution.
